Language in XML elements

Specifying the language of a document for metadata

When you produce web ebooks such as EPUB or web pages, you will need to specify a language for the ebook to be valid (for example, so it passes "epubcheck" validation). In all book component elements, you should add the attribute xml:lang to specify the language as an abbreviation.

For example, for English language documents, state the attribute value "en" for xml:lang. A valid alternative to specify Australian English is "en-AU". This value is created in HTML coding as a metadata element when you produce EPUB and web ebooks.

Note: Valid language abbreviations must follow the RFC 5646 standard for internet language description.
